Many years ago I was happily enjoying my dream of living on a huge farm. All of my neighbors were a quarter mile away at least. Given this distance you'd think we never saw each other, but contrarywise we were actually very close and saw each other regularly.

One of my neighbors would drive his tractor up the long driveway to my house on a weekend morning for a cup of coffee and some friendly chitchat.

On one of those occasions the conversation turned to Canadian Thistles, a beautiful plant, but one that's extremely invasive in pastures. It can take over, with the result that less grass is available for horses, cows, and other grazing animals.

I was proudly telling my neighbor about how fastidious I'd been about cutting down the thistles and piling them up behind the barn, away from the pasture.

"Oh no!" he exclaimed. "You don't want to cut them down. You need to pull them up by the roots. Otherwise they'll just come back bigger and meaner."

This truism came back to me recently when I was experiencing a repeat of a learning opportunity, otherwise known as a personal challenge. I remembered how thistles must be pulled up by the roots, or else they'll come back bigger and meaner, as my farmer neighbor informed me. It was certainly true in the current incident that I was experiencing. I'd had repeats of this incident in differing scenerios, but always it was the same basic issue. And each time that it reappeared it was bigger and meaner.

As a result of the wisdom of the thistle, I was motivated to dig deep and discover the root cause of the issue. Once I "unearthed" it, I was able to rid myself of the issue once and for all.

What are the thistles in your life? Are you just cutting them down or are you uprooting them?

Personal boundaries are defined as "standards and limits that you set in regard to what you will and will not accept in other people's behavior toward you or in your presence." More simply stated, they're invisible lines of protection you set around yourself.

When you use personal boundaries, you empower yourself. No longer will you find yourself being a victim to what other people think you should do, believe, say, and more.

Personal boundaries are a vital part of raising your perceived value of yourself. People who have strong personal boundaries have great self respect and honor their worth.
