The
Wisdom of Unbalancing Yourself Life
is for growth and growth only occurs through movement. To be in balance is to
be in stasis, a state of no movement. The only way movement, and thus growth,
can happen is through the discomfort of being off balance. Consider
this: in order to walk forward, you must first shift your body forward so that
your weight is off balance. Then you place a foot out in front to catch yourself
so you don't fall on your nose. Thus, in order for any forward movement to occur,
you must first let go of the safety and security of being in balance. This is
true not only of walking but is also true of moving forward mentally, emotionally,
and spiritually in life. A
large part of the learning you came onto the planet for this lifetime is about
the balance between two major emotions that are polar opposites. Much as you may
attempt to bring them into balance, the rascally things just won't be ordered.
It's very much like living on a teeter-totter. Either you're on the side of the
teeter-totter that's up or you're on the other side which is on the ground, but
both sides cannot be at the top at the same time. Much
like the teeter-totter, in addition to the two polar opposites of up and down,
you also have a central pivot point. However, while this pivot point may look
like the answer to balancing these two opposites, it isn't. The pivot point is
the stillpoint - the place of no movement. No in breath or out breath. No movement
up or down, forward or backward. Hence, no growth, learning, and thus, improvement.
You
have the ability to experience both polarities of any emotion as well as the point
of non-polarity. In all things you will find these three options. Each offers
you its own unique experience and thus novel learning. To find the truth, the
pure, grand truth, in any emotional experience, you must explore this triad of
beingness. To further add to your completeness with any experience, there are
degrees of any two opposites that you might also explore. As
an experiment with this new concept of balancing the triad of emotional states
(balance or stasis plus the two extreme opposites), play with this exercise: 1.
You'll need three sheets of paper. Envision a line about ten to fifteen feet long
on the floor. Place one sheet in the center of this line and one at each end.
2. Focus on an emotion you're currently experiencing due to some issue in
your life. Write the name of that emotion on a sheet of paper at one of the ends.
Determine the opposite of that emotion and write its name on the other sheet of
paper at the other end of the line. 3. Stand on the paper in the center. This
is the neutral point. Notice how you feel... emotionally and physically. Pay particular
attention to your upper chest and your solar plexus area. 4. Turn your back
to one end of the line. Take one step backward toward that end. It is important
that you keep your back toward the emotion you're moving closer to so that your
mind doesn't jump to the end. Notice now how you feel as you're one step closer
to that emotion. 5. Take another step backward, and again notice how you feel.
Continue until you reach the end. Step off the line and go back to the center.
6. Turn your back toward the other emotion, the opposite of the one you just
experienced, and repeat the backward steps, noticing at each step how you feel.
7. At the end, come back to the neutral or stillpoint in the center. Stay
there for a bit and notice how you feel. Then compare the three emotional experiences.
You might wish to record your comments in a journal. Alternatively you may wish
to have someone take notes for you as you proceed through this exercise.
Now
you have experienced the triality of that emotion and have gained greater knowledge
about the importance and influence in your life of both polar extremes. Continue
to practice this exercise whenever you're experiencing an emotional issue and
want to understand more about it. You'll be gaining not only knowledge and awareness
about the power of that emotion, but also about how best to utilize the imbalance
of it. You'll learn how to control the balance of your emotion and then come to
the stillpoint for a period of time. This exercise offers you the opportunity
to compare the two opposites and discern what importance they have for you regarding
their meaning in any and all situations. It
is only by moving out of center and off balance for the purpose of comparing polar
opposites that you can gain deeper knowledge of the issue and yourself. Love,
