Backing Into Your Future Often, when you most want something and are going after it, whatever you want eludes you. It seems as if the harder you run after it, the more you're chasing it away from you. This phenomenon is exemplified in an incident that happened to me years ago when I was preparing to go riding with a friend on her horses. She had one horse that was almost impossible to catch and, yes, that was the one she chose for me. With both of my jacket pockets packed full of grain with which to lure the reluctant horse toward me, I grabbed the halter and went with my friend out to the pasture to catch our horses. When my horse saw me coming at him with my hand full of grain and the dreaded halter, he casually walked away from me. I picked up my pace and so did he. I stopped and so did he. Although I think the horse was enjoying it, this dance between us was becoming rather frustrating for me. Then inspiration hit. I turned around with my back to him and began walking backwards. The horse just stood there, no doubt thinking that as long as my back was toward him he was safe. Horse logic told him that even if my feet were moving, they were taking me away from him. He was one surprised horse when I got next to him, spun around, and threw the halter rope around his neck! I could almost hear him thinking, "Now, how the heck did she do that?" Chasing after something you want, such as your life purpose, can be a lot like catching that wary horse. It may seem like no matter how hard or long you chase after it, it'll continue to be elusively just out of reach. Sometimes you just have to back into it. The ways in which you were programmed while you were growing up have much to do with whether you walk directly up to your desires, or whether you'll have to back into them. If you were raised like most children, you were innocently, lovingly, and incorrectly taught to deny your true passions in the belief that this would keep you from becoming arrogant, selfish, and egotistical. And perhaps it did. But it also kept you from becoming happy, satisfied, and passionatly loving your life. How often did you hear one of your parents or your teachers say to you, "Oh, you don't want that. It's not good for you. You want this instead." You knew what you wanted, didn't you? But the only person who would listen to you was yourself. And so you accepted it anyway in the hopes that you'd be considered a "good little child." Now, as an adult, that polite little child is still inside of you and you have a lifelong habit of identifying what you don't want. It's much easier for you to know what you don't want than to know what you do want. So, in order to find out what you truly want, you may just have to back into it by first defining what you don't want. Your wants, desires, and passions are hugely important clues about your life purpose. By defining what you don't want you'll be backing into vital information that will help you identify what you do want - to live your life purpose. Love, ps.
