Being the Somebody

One of my most favorite places to enjoy a walk in nature is at Fort Flagler State Park. It's 1500 acres of beautiful forests with walking trails and miles of beach that's bordered by piles of driftwood in all shapes and sizes. The old parade grounds are now playgrounds for kids, kite-flyers, and campers. There are old bunkers still intact which are fun to explore and play in.

But in my opinion, the best parts are the forests and the beaches. Especially the beaches. They're always changing, due to the storms that erode the sand cliffs and change the beaches from rocky to sandy. High winter tides move the driftwood around or bring new driftwood in. The same stretch of beach can be sandy one day and a week later, rocky.

And the views from the beaches are jaw-dropping. Mt. Baker (as pictured above through the driftwood), Mt. Rainier, the Olympic Mountains, Port Townsend, and all kinds of marine traffic. Ferry boats, sail boats, giant container ships, tugs and barges, and more all pass by Fort Flagler.

One day as my husband and I were walking toward the beach by the old lighthouse, we were appalled to see big pieces of white plastic all over the ground by the huge rocks that edge the top of the beach. Plastic sand bags had been put in place to keep the high tides and winter wind storms from washing the salt water onto the land and flooding it. The result was not that the land was protected, but instead it was flooded as you can see in this photo. (The sign says "No Vehicles Allowed").The high wind and water we'd had during the winter tore the bags apart and their remains were left as an ugly reminder of why we shouldn't use plastic sand bags.

The next day I kept remembering that ugly plastic all over the ground. At one point I said to myself, "Somebody should do something about that.
They should pick up all that ugly and potentially dangerous plastic. It could get out into the water and harm the sea life."

As this thought cruised through my head, suddenly I heard another voice. It said simply, "YOU are that Somebody."

Yep. I was that Somebody. So the next weekend my husband and I went to Flagler and spent a couple of hours picking up as much of the white plastic remains as we could. Some of it was buried beneath sand and without a backhoe we couldn't get it out. Still, we were able to clean up about a third of the plastic and take it to the dump.

A few days later we were getting our weekly groceries and I was relating to the checker about my experience of being the Somebody. She told me about an older woman who is another Somebody. She cleans up litter in and around the town where she lives. The checker said she can be seen in many different locales on her daily walk, picking up other people's litter.

My husband recently told me of another Somebody. He commutes to a job site where he's currently working and at one section of the freeway, the median is heavily strewn with litter that people have thrown out of their vehicles. He has complained to me about it often. One day shortly after we'd been Somebodies cleaning up the plastic at the beach, he came home from work and told me about a Somebody he saw on his drive home. A young man was in the meridian as he drove by, picking up all the litter.

When you hear yourself saying, "Somebody should do something about this," that's an important message meant for you. It means that the Somebody is you.

Peace and Love,
Kathy
