Yourself for Growth
To
be in balance is to be in stasis, a state of no movement. Life is for growth and
that only occurs through movement. The only way movement, and thus growth, can
happen is through the discomfort of being off balance. Consider
that in order to do such a simple act as to walk forward, you must let go of the
safety and security of being in balance. You must first shift your body forward
so that your weight is off balance.Then you place one foot out in front to catch
yourself so you don't fall on your nose. This
is true not only of walking but of moving forward in life mentally - emotionally,
and spiritually. A
large part of the learning you desired this lifetime is about the balance between
two major emotions that are polar opposites. Much as you may attempt to bring
them into balance, the rascally things just won't be ordered. Either you have
one side of the teeter-totter up or the other, but both cannot be at the top at
the same time. In
addition to the two polar opposites, you also have a pivot point at which you
can reside. However, while this pivot point may look like the answer to balancing
these two opposites, it isn't. The pivot point is the stillpoint - the place of
no movement. No in breath or out breath. No movement up or down, forward or backward,
inward or outward. Hence, no growth and improvement. You
have the ability to experience both polarities of any emotion and the point
of non-polarity. In all things you will find these three options. Each offers
you its own unique experience and thus novel learning. To find the truth, the
pure truth, in anything and in any experience, you must explore this triad of
beingness. To further add to your completeness with any experience, there are
degrees within any two opposites that you might also explore. As
an experiment with this new concept of balancing the triad of emotional states
(balance or stasis plus the two extreme opposites), play with this exercise: 1.
You'll need three sheets of paper. Focus on an emotion you're currently experiencing
due to some issue in your life. Write the name of that emotion on one of the sheets
of paper. Determine the opposite of that emotion and write its name on the other
sheet of paper. 2.
Envision a line of about ten to fifteen feet long on the floor. Place the blank
sheet of paper in the center of this line. Then place one of the opposing emotions
at each end of the line. 3.
Stand on the paper in the center. This is the neutral point. Notice how you feel
emotionally. Then scan your body and notice how you feel physically. Pay particular
attention to your upper chest and your solar plexus area. 4.
Turn your back to one end of the line. Take one step backward toward that end.
It is important that you keep your back toward the emotion as you're moving closer
to it so that your mind doesn't jump to the end. Notice now how you feel as you're
one step closer to that emotion.
5. Take another step backward, and again notice how you feel. Continue taking
a step backward and then noticing your feelings, emotional as well as physical.
6.
When you're complete with this part of the process, step off the line and go back
to the center. Turn your back toward the other emotion, the opposite of the one
you just experienced, and repeat the backward steps, noticing at each one how
you feel, emotionally and physically. 7.
At the end, return to the neutral or stillpoint in the center. Stand on that position
for a bit and notice how you feel. Then compare the three emotional and mental
experiences.
You may wish to have someone take notes for you as you proceed through this exercise.
If you do this process alone you might use a recorder to your comments. Now
you have experienced the triality of your emotion and the importance or influence
of both polar extremes. Practice
this exercise whenever you're having an emotional experience and want to understand
more about it. You'll be gaining not only knowledge and awareness about the power
of that emotion, but also about how best to utilize and learn from the imbalance
of it. You'll learn how more deeply about the meaning and importance of your emotion.
When you come to the stillpoint during the exercise you can compare the two opposites
and discern what import they have for you regarding the meaning and the learning
of the particular situation as well as any and all situations. It
is only by moving out of center and off balance for the purpose of comparing the
polar opposites that you can gain deeper knowledge. Love, Kathy
