Happiness
Heroes I've
been blessed in my life to have two Happiness Heroes - people who served as inspirations
for me, showing me how to delight in the fun of life. Both of these women were
widowed at a relatively early age when each of them still had four young children
at home. Somehow they garnered the courage and energy to get a job to support
their family. Even more, in the midst of all the stress and fear they suffered,
they retained a wondrous sense of humor. Betty
Lou Betty Lou was a cook at a local country cafe when I met her. The cafe
was always crammed with customers, no matter what time of day. It wasn't the food
(Betty's cooking was sorta edible at best.) It was Betty Lou herself who attracted
the crowds. She had a wondrous sense of humor that radiated out to everyone. On
May Day she'd leave her greasy cook station and dance around the cafe, singing
at the top of her lungs her little May Day song: "Hooray! Hooray! The first
of May! Outdoor sex begins today!" Mind you, she wasn't exactly a sex symbol.
She described her 60-something body as being a "squat body". It
wasn't just May Day that had her performing for the customers' enjoyment and delight.
One day when I was eating lunch at the cafe, she came out from her cook station
to stand in front of me at the counter, propped her elbows up on the counter and
asked, "You know what this country needs?" I shook my head NO. She then
replied, "A pink chiffon prom formal." Then she flounced back to her
greasy cooking, leaving me with my mouth hanging open. Little
did she know that I had just such an item, although it was red, left over from
a past Halloween. I brought it to the cafe the next day and she immediately pulled
it on over her greasy, food-splattered clothes and proceeded to flounce around
the cafe, doing Loretta Young-style pirouettes. No one would have ever guessed,
from her overflowing happiness, that she had had such difficult times or that
now she was often lonely because her kids were grown and gone. Libby I
wasn't too sure I wanted to meet Libby. She was an older woman who lived just
down the street from where we'd recently moved into a newer home. I was concerned
about living so close to a woman who didn't seem to be mentally healthy. After
all, it was June and she had a fully decorated Christmas tree in her living room
window. One
day as my new next-door neighbor and I were on our daily walk together, we passed
Libby's house. Libby was outside in her front yard and my neighbor dragged me
over to meet her. "Happy
to know you," she said with a huge smile. "Come on in and see my Christmas
tree." Reluctantly
I followed her into her house, where she proudly showed me the tree with the decorations
hanging on it. "Some of these decorations are worth over $1000 each,"
she proudly announced. "Oh, I didn't pay for them. They belong to a young
man I met at church. He drove me home from church one day and we got to chatting.
He has all these Christmas decorations that are hand-blown and are collector's
items, and he had no place to display them. So we made a deal. He'd come over
once a week and clean my house and I'd let him put the tree up with all his decorations.
That way he could enjoy seeing them at least once a week. And I get my house cleaned." If
this was a crazy woman, I wanted to be her kind of crazy! Libby's
joy of life spilled out in unexpected ways. One day she knocked on my front door
and when I answered, she invited me to a Banana Split Party, which was starting
in an hour. When I got to her house at the appointed time, I found half the neighborhood
there already. After
we'd chatted for a while, Libby grabbed me and one of the gents and pulled us
over to the kitchen area. "You two are the Banana Split Makers," she
announced. Dutifully we began. He scooped out the ice cream (chocolate only) and
dumped it in the small bowls Libby had set out. I began peeling bananas and slicing
them lengthwise. Soon Libby came over to see how we were doing and announced that
the chocolate syrup she'd made was in a big bowl and people could just help themselves.
I
explained to her how Banana Splits were usually made, with three flavors of ice
cream and three flavors of syrups. She just looked at me blankly. Then she noticed
how I was cutting the bananas. "Oh. That must be why they're called Banana
Splits. I always wondered." She'd
decided to have a Banana Split party without a clue as to what a Banana Split
was! She didn't let a silly thing like lack of knowledge keep her from having
a fun time in life. Libby
is an artist and paints beautiful brightly-colored woodsy scenes. In fact, everything
about Libby is colorful. The color scheme of her clothing runs to bright turquoise,
sunshine yellow, hot pink, and neon green. No boring beige for this woman! Her
love of bright, happy colors spilled out to her front door, too. Although the
development in which we lived had an extremely strict rule about what color you
could pain the exterior of your house (beige, white, or gray) she painted her
front door hot pink! To my knowledge, she was the only one in Port Ludlow who
had a hot pink front door. It made me smile every time I went by her house. She
generously gifted me with two of her paintings. They're both hanging in the entry
of our home, a room I've dubbed The Libby Lobby. Every time I look at them, I
feel happiness welling up inside of me. Here's a photo of my favorite. So,
who are your Happiness Heroes? Whose
Happiness Hero are you? Love, Kathy

Tools to Enhance Your Life YOU
are a magical, mystical being. You
have talents, abilities, and powers beyond those that you currently are aware
of or believe that you have. The most important of these is your ability to communicate
with your spiritual guidance.
However, because your spirit guides reside in other dimensions it can often be
difficult for them to communicate with you… and you with them. Thus, it's often
necessary to use certain oracles or tools, such as Tarot or a pendulum. Once you
learn how to decode their messages using these tools, communication between you
and your spirit guides becomes almost as easy as calling them on the phone. (Well,
almost!) The
easy-to-understand instructions in this book expand your awareness so you can
quickly recognize and interpret the guidance being shared with you by your sources
of Higher Wisdom. The
