Superman Comes Out of the Closet This
is an excerpt from a book I'm currently writing, entitled Floor Time. It's
about my adventures, experiences, and life lessons when I was a real estate agent
many years ago. It's the sequel to Studs, my semi-true novel about when
I was a Project Superintendent, building a mini-mart/gas station in a small town
many miles and a ferry ride from my home. Tim
was the owner/broker of the most successful real estate office in the entire county.
He was also the most inspired and inspiring sales manager I've ever known or known...
or known of. Some
of his techniques were borrowed from national sales motivators and some were of
his own creation. His were often a bit on the wacky side. Still, they seemed to
work pretty good, since his office was by far the top real estate office in the
area. He
presented one of his wildest motivational messages during one of our weekly meetings.
All of us agents were sitting around the huge conference table that pretty much
filled the upstairs level of the office, waiting for the meeting to start so we
could get it over with and get on with selling real estate… and thus make money.
Usually
Tim led the meeting, but this time his wife stood up and said loudly, "Okay. Let's
get quiet so we can start the meeting. Tim is out of town this morning and instead
of him leading the meeting, we have a special guest. I'd like you all to welcome….SUPERMAN!!"
She
stood aside and began clapping her hands while all of us just looked at her, dumbfounded.
Suddenly
one of the doors to the storage closets flew open and Tim jumped out, dressed
in a Superman costume! We
were all so surprised that none of knew how to react for a few moments. Then we
all burst out laughing, falling all over the place at the image of our glorious
leader dressed up in a Superman costume. He
walked toward the head of the table and waited for us all to contain our laughter.
Then he began
telling us that we all had super powers, just like Superman. He went on to describe
how we were all different in our talents, knowledge, experience and more. All
of those things were our super powers, which we could easily access and
use in our work as Realtors.
Then he gave examples of a few of the agents - their super powers and how they
use them in their business. - One
of the agents was quiet and soft spoken, which put his clients at ease and calmed
them. This was as important trait, since he dealt mainly with buyers who were
always, to some degree or another, fearful as to whether they were doing the right
thing regarding the purchase of a particular home.
-
Another agent was very social, active in several local charities which gave her
an identity as a trustworthy person who cares about other people. Trusting the
salesperson is important for buyers and sellers when they're dealing with a big
ticket item like real estate.
- One
of the top producing agents also had had a successful yacht business, which gave
her the knowledge and connections she needed in her real estate specialty - commercial
properties.
- I
had a work history in residential construction, so many of my clients were contractors
who built spec homes. My knowledge of construction also helped to put buyers at
ease as I explained specifically how well the house they were looking at was constructed.
Well, it was a very odd sales meeting, and one that none of us ever forgot. We
all began to muse about what our super powers might be and how we could use them
to better our abilities as Realtors.
We all have superpowers, but until we acknowledge them and use them they have
no value or purpose - for us and for all those with whom we connect. What
are your superpowers? How
have you used them in the past? How
might you use them now? Love, Kathy
ps.
The next day I was on Floor Time when a call came in from Tim. He said that he
had to use a phone booth because his cell phone went dead and he wanted to ask
his wife about some detail regarding a property. I put him on hold, walked into
her office and announced, "There's a guy on line 2 for you. He said he's stuck
in a phone booth. I think it's Superman." She gave me a puzzled look as she lifted
the phone off the receiver. I turned around and walked back to the Floor Time
desk. Almost immediately I heard peals of laughter coming from her office.
Just
for Fun! I
haven't always been a life coach. I've had many jobs and types of work that include
(but aren't limited to) logging, clam digging, bartending, pea testing, motel
maid, owner/operator of a roofing company, carpenter, Realtor, construction estimator,
and salesperson of building supplies to contractors. The
weirdest and wackiest of all my jobs was when I was a Construction Superintendent
in charge of building a mini-mart/gas station. Everything from the job site itself
to the subcontractors had some oddball aspect to it, often requiring me to come
up with some creative and often unusual solutions. Enjoy
the adventures of my alter ego, Katlin Greene, in this rollicking fun book. You
