The
Power of Your Story
For
eons all knowledge and wisdom was shared by the telling of stories.
Stories ranged from those of great battles to overcoming relationship
issues. The story of a great battle would be used to raise the spirits
and energy of men who were facing an upcoming battle with another
tribe. When
a member of the tribe was having a life challenge, one of the elders
would gently share their story of a similar experience and how they
overcame the issue.
Those
ancient folks who shared their stories may be long gone, but the
custom of story telling is still a most powerful method of sharing
knowledge and wisdom.
In
today's world we know these stories as legends, fairy tales, tribal
lore, myths, and the like. While they are often used for entertainment
purposes, the truth is that they are still teaching us and assisting
us to overcome challenges we face in our world. The Hawaiians use
this practice in their daily life and call it "talking story".
There are several reasons why the power of story is so effective
in helping others to overcome challenges:
1.
It's personal, so the listener can relate to it more effectively.
Most often, the reason someone is nudged to share their story with
another person is because they can see that the other is going through
a difficulty that they, too, once faced... and overcame.
2.
It's timely and to the point. A how-to book can be an excellent
source of information for overcoming challenges. However, it can
also be quite general in nature, offering too much information that's
irrelevant to the issue at hand. An excess of information can often
be confusing. A story focuses on one aspect of an issue, aiding
in clarity.
3.
It's comforting. Often when someone is going through a challenge
they can feel like they're the only one in the world who feels the
way they do. Knowing that someone else has been there and experienced
the same thing that they are experiencing is comforting.
If
you've been on this planet for any length of time, and I assume
you have because you're reading this, then you've had many life
experiences and challenges that you've overcome and have learned
from. These are your stories. I invite you to share a story with
someone who may be needing the knowledge and wisdom you have to
offer them.
In
order to be most effective here are some guidelines:
1.
Ask permission. The other person may not be ready or willing
to hear about moving out of their misery. There may be something
in the issue or situation for them to experience so that their learning
can be complete. Besides, nobody likes a know-it-all or a buttinsky.
Gently ask "May I share with you an experience I once had that
is similar to what you're going through and what I learned from
it?"
2.
Keep it short. If your listener begins yawning or nodding off,
you've gone on too long. Keep just enough detail in your story to
let them know your experience was similar to theirs as you share
the wisdom you gained and how you got it.
3.
Be clear about how you learned from your experience.
They'll want and need some instruction here. Teach by example. Your
example. What did you do to gain knowledge and wisdom from your
similar experience?
4.
End with the wisdom you gained. The moral to the story is always
at the end. That way it stays in the listener's mind so that they
can remember it and use it when the time is most opportune for them.
Aside
from sharing your story face-to-face with another person, you can
share your stories with many others. Write a story of one of your
challenges and how you overcame it. Then offer it to online magazines
and newsletters for publication. Submit it to print magazines. Write
a book and publish it in ebook or print format on Amazon.com for
free.
Share
the knowledge and wisdom your life experiences have bestowed upon
you with the power of your story.
Love,
Kathy
