The Easy Way to Happify Happify?
Yep. Years
ago when I was in the midst of writing my first book, An
Inner Journey, I had a wonderful editor who was a word addict. At one
point she emailed me to let me know I had used a word that didn't exist. She said
that she couldn't find it in any of her five dictionaries, so it wasn't
a real word. "Somebody
made up all those words in your five dictionaries. I just made up that word. So
just like the words in your dictionaries, it now exists and is a real word,"
I replied. Shortly
after that she sent me another email... this one with a word that she had proudly
made up. So,
yes. Happify. The
easiest way to get happified is with the conscious use of your everyday words.
The words you use every day, all day, have an amazingly powerful effect on how
you feel emotionally. We
have gazillions of words to describe our emotions. Not only every emotion that
we feel has a word to described it, but there are also multitudes of degrees and
levels of each emotion, each with its own word. To
experience the power of the words you think and say on your emotions and your
body, try this: think of a situation or event that caused you to feel angry. Really,
really, really angry. Now state out loud: "I'm irate." Or livid, fuming,
enraged, infuriated, or some other extreme degree of anger. Notice how you feel,
not just emotionally but physically. Now state out loud, "I'm miffed."
Notice how your emotional state instantly became less intense and your body relaxed
a bit. You may even feel like giggling at the silliness of that word. Not
only does the meaning of a word affect how you feel, but the sound of it also
has impact on your emotions. Try this: think of the word "soothing"
and notice that you instantly feel a slight lessening of tension in your body.
It could be in your neck, shoulders, stomach, or the way you're breathing. Somewhere
your body just relaxed a bit. Although
we who speak English have a little over 170,000 words in our language, the average
person uses only about 7,000 of them. The result is habitual useage of the same
words to describe how we think and feel. Imagine
if you changed just a few of those words, how you might also change the way you
think. And thus, how you feel, both emotionally and physically. What
new words might you now use to happify yourself? Love
and Happifying, Kathy
