The Hummingbird and the Woodpecker From the window in my home office I have a great view of my neighbor's driveway and garage door. I also can see some of the shrubs and trees that line his driveway. One of these trees is a White Bark Birch. Recently I noticed a Red-headed Woodpecker happily pounding away on the trunk of the White Bark Birch, indicating that the tree has some kind of insect infestation. The Woodpecker would come to feast on the insects every day or so, providing me with the pleasure of seeing its beauty. Last week there was a new visitor to this natural bird feeder. A Hummingbird began hovering near the insect-laden white tree trunk. It, too, was eating the insects that were infesting the tree. The amazing thing about this is that the Hummingbird doesn't have the ability to peck at the bark in order to gain availability to the insects that reside under the bark. It needs the Woodpecker to open up the bark by pecking holes in the bark in order to gain access to the insects. After enjoying this interaction for a bit, it came to me that this was more than an act of symbiosis in nature. This was an Animal Message for me. But what was it? A bit of musing upon the subject brought me to the realization that the Woodpecker symbolized a teacher, parent, or life coach, in that it was opening up a way in which the Hummingbird could gain access to nutrition. The symbolic meaning of nutrition in this Animal Message is that of wisdom and knowledge. The Hummingbird represented the student, child, or coaching client who is hungry for the nutrition of knowledge. It needs the Woodpecker to give it access to the source of what it seeks. It is only by the symbiotic action of the Woodpecker that the Hummingbird can gain the life-giving nutrition it needs and desires. At all times, everyone is either a Woodpecker or a Hummingbird. Depending upon the situation, you are either being a Woodpecker by opening someone's path to knowledge or being a Hummingbird by following the path being opened. Woodpeckers: By your actions and your words, what are you teaching? Hummingbirds: What are you learning from the actions and words of the Woodpeckers? Love,
