Miracles: Step by Step

It recently occurred to me that throughout my life I've experienced quite a few very unusual incidents. At the time that these incidents occurred they seemed normal… nothing unusual or out of the ordinary. But when I reviewed them afterward, I began to realize that there was something very extraordinary about them. Something that was unusual to the point of being mystical… and even miraculous.

One of the more important realizations I had about these miracles is that they don't happen all of a sudden.

They happen step by step... as this incident illustrates:

On Sunday mornings, Wayne and I used to love wallowing in the Seattle Sunday papers… laughing at the comics sections, enjoying the glossy feature magazines, and once in a while actually reading the news. However, when we lived out in the boondocks of Quilcene, our mailbox wasn't large enough to stuff the thick Sunday editions of both Seattle papers in it. So Wayne would kindly drive to the nearest grocery store… which was in the town of Quilcene, a drive of about fifteen miles from our house… and pick up both papers.

One Sunday morning as he was preparing to leave he turned to me and asked, "Can I bring you anything?"

"Yeah. Bring me a surprise," I answered.

He looked at me with confusion. "What kind of surprise," he finally asked.

"Well, if I tell you it won't be a surprise. Will it?" I answered.

He just looked at me blankly and after a few moments turned and walked out to his truck. As I heard him roaring down our dirt driveway to the highway I wondered what he could possibly find in Quilcene that would surprise me. After all, Quilcene was a dinky logging town with one small grocery store/gas station, a post office, a farm supply store and a tavern. There wasn't much in that town that would or could surprise me.

Or so I thought.

After some time I heard his truck roaring back up the driveway and into our front yard. As he came stomping into the house with his arms full of newspapers, he had a huge grin on his face.

"This is going to be interesting," I thought.

He dropped the newspapers on the kitchen table and stood looking at me with a wide grin splitting his face. "Well, I got your surprise. Are you ready?" he said smugly.

"Okay. Lay it on me," I said.

He stuck his hand inside his jacket and pulled out a huge tail feather of a Bald Eagle. As he handed it to me, he began to tell me the unusual story of how he got it.

"I was driving along the highway, wondering what the heck a surprise from Quilcene would look like. What could there possibly be in Quilcene that would be even close to a surprise. Then all of a sudden something hit the windshield, jolting me out of my thoughts about your surprise. I almost ran off the road. It stuck to the windshield for a few moments, just long enough for me to see that it was a huge feather. Then it flew off the windshield toward the ditch along the road. I stopped real quick and jumped out of my truck to try to find it. And there, lying in the tall grass in the ditch, was this feather. Is a Bald Eagle feather a good enough surprise?" he said smugly.

I was speechless. Not only was it a magical miracle that a Bald Eagle feather would fall out of the sky and hit the windshield of his truck, it was just as amazing that he actually stopped to find it.

To this day, that feather remains one of my favorite nature "finds". I keep it in a large glass vase on the table in my Crystal Room, along with a few other Eagle feathers I've been blessed to find in the bushes and on the ground during our hikes near a local Eagle nesting area. Every time I look at that feather, I'm reminded of the fact that miracles happen when you least expect them… and in ways you might never imagine.

The Steps of This Miracle:

1. Before he left to drive into Quilcene to get the Sunday papers, Wayne asked me if I wanted anything from town.
2. I was inspired to ask him for a surprise.
3. My request for a surprise jolted him out of his normal thought patterns.
4. On the drive to Quilcene, Wayne was still focused on my request for a surprise.
5. When the feather hit the windshield of his truck, it jerked him out of his musing.
6. He was motivated to stop and try to find the feather that had hit his windshield.
7. He discovered the Bald Eagle feather and realized that it was the surprise that I'd asked for.
8. Wayne proudly presented his "surprise" to me when he returned home.

This story may awaken in you a memory of a wondrous experience that you've had. Should this occur, I invite you to allow your mind to drift back to that event... to your own miracle. You may wish to gather paper and pen in order to make a few notes about the steps of your own miraculous experience. Doing so will awaken in you a greater awareness of all the miracles you've experienced and continue to experience in your own life.

Love,
Kathy

ps. This is one of the many miracles I've experienced in my life, many of which are in my newest ebook, Miracles: Step by Step ... now available on Amazon.com.
