Getting in Harmony
"You
don't get harmony when everyone sings the same note."
Steve Goodier
Many
years ago when I began my roofing company, finding and getting jobs
was a real challenge. As a result, there were many times when I
barely had enough money to pay my rent. One month my entire gross
income was $500. Out of that I had to pay for the materials on the
one job I'd had that month, wages for my employees, and my own household
expenses.
During
a particulary dry period, in desperation I called a competitor of
mine and asked if he had any jobs going currently and if so, would
he be willing to hire me to help him. Thankfully the guy was a kind
soul and put me to work.
Through
the years we became friends and often found ourselves working together.
When I was out of work I knew I could count on him to hire me if
he had a job going, and vice versa. Often we would put the other's
entire crew to work along with our own crew.
At
one point I received a request to bid on a very difficult roof,
so I asked him to help me. He willingly measured the roof with me
and taught me a few things about quirky roofs and bidding them.
I got the job and the two of us partnered on the job, sharing the
proceeds.
This
true story is about people working together in harmony. Although
we were competitors in the traditional sense, both of us benefited
in many ways from our unofficial partnership. Our differences in
such areas as construction experience, business and marketing know-how,
and dealing with employees gave each of us a greater wealth of knowledge
with which to expand our abilities. As a result, everyone benefitted
- including the two of us, our employees, our customers, and our
suppliers.
Now,
imagine how you might benefit from working together in harmony with
a person who is different than you to achieve a common goal. What
talents, gifts, knowledge, and experience do you have that might
be of benefit in achieving your common goal? What talents, gifts,
knowledge, and experience does the other person have to contribute?
Next,
expand upon that concept and imagine yourself working in harmony
with a group of others and how you and they might benefit. If you
wish, envision specific people you know and then ask the same questions
as above.
With
Love and Harmony,
Kathy
ps.
There are many groups of people who are working together in harmony
for the benefit of our Earth and the beings we share it with. The
Audubon Society, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC),
and Friends of the Earth (FOE)
are just a few. If you don't know where to start in order to find
a group of people working in harmony for the greater good, these
might be a starting point for you.
