The Beauty of Imperfection One of my favorite things to do is to go to one of the small parks near where we live and walk a trail amongst the trees. Recently as I was meandering along a trail, admiring the beauty of the trees, I came to the realization that the trees I thought were most beautiful were the huge, old, gnarly trees. The depth and textures of the bark on the ancient Fir trees are beyond beautiful to me. The contorted shapes of the Madrona trees are like beautiful sculptures. The curvy patterns of the Cedar tree bark I find fascinating, intriguing, amazing.
One day as I was musing about how I loved the old trees and found them much more beautiful than the young trees with their perfectly straight shapes and smooth, tidy bark, I came to the realization that, like the trees, I found the people who are unusual in their presentation of self to be more attractive to me than those who look like the latest media-approved rendition of beauty. All of this musing was done in my Crystal Room, where I have many beautiful crystals. Suddenly it came to me that the reason I find crystals so beautiful is because of their flaws. The cracks or occlusions inside of them refract the light, illuminating wondrous shapes of their inner beauty. Often the light causes rainbows to appear within them. Without the flaws inside of the crystals they'd look just like clear, boring glass.
The gnarly bark on the old Fir trees, the odd shapes of the Madrona trees, the shaggy Cedar tree bark, and the cracks inside the crystals have one thing in common: they're all products of hardships, challenges, and dangers overcome. The trees have overcome many hardships during their lifetime - hardships that are reflected in their outer presentation. The occlusions inside the crystals are the result of extreme heat, such as volcanic action, and tremendous pressure as they're being formed within the depths of our Earth. The result is that both trees and crystals become uniquely beautiful in their outward appearance. What challenging experiences have you gone through?
