Your Life is an Art Form

Donnie was known locally as a great chef. People would drive for hours just to have dinner at any place he was cooking.

We'd met when he was working as the chef at a local resort and where I had begun working as a motel maid. Both of us were of the Hippie genre, working with middle class straight people, so we bonded and became great friends.

Through the years he moved from one restaurant to another. Eventually he evolved from working for other restaurant owners to becoming a restaurant owner himself.

During that time, I also had evolved and no longer was a motel maid, so we didn't see each other except for the times I'd go with a friend to where ever he was working at the time to have a delectable dinner.

Late one night there was a knocking on my front door. Not knowing who would be visiting me so late at night, I kept quiet, hoping they'd go away. Finally I heard a man's voice yelling, "Open up. I know you're in there. It's Donnie come to visit you."

I opened the door and he practically fell into the room. He drunkenly staggered over to the sofa and fell onto it.

"To what do I owe this unexpected visit," I asked him.

"I just thought I'd come visit you. Amy told me where you live. You got any food around here? I didn't have dinner and I'm hungry," he responded.

"Would you like some scrambled eggs?" I offered.

"That would be great. No one ever cooks for me," he complained. "You know what I'd really like?"

"Nope. Surprise me," I responded.

"I've always wanted to have an art show that's all food. Did you know that I paint?" he slurred.

"Yes. I've seen some of your paintings in your restaurant. They're very beautiful," I said.

"Well, here's how I envision my Food as Art Show. People will come in and all the food will be on display so they can see how beautiful it is. Then they'll sit down at tables and they'll eat the food. Each type of food will be a separate course. A potato will be one course. A vegetable another course. I'll be on a stage and will talk about the food as they begin to eat it.They'll be guided by me to smell it's beautiful aromas, feel the variety of textures in their mouth, taste the exquisite flavors. They'll get to not only see how food can be art, but they'll be able to use ALL their senses to enjoy it's beauty, ya see. Whaddya think about that?" he said... and then slid down to prone position on the sofa and passed out.

And that was the last time I saw Donnie. Shortly afterward he closed up his restaurant and moved to Nepal... never to be heard from again by any of us who had known him.

To my knowledge he never did get to live his wondrous dream of having an art show featuring food instead of paintings. Nor did anyone get to enjoy with all their senses, all their being, his beautiful, sensuous, delicious creativity.

Everyone has a vision of something they'd like to create... something that would give others a bit of happiness... but they hesitate for one reason or another.

What wondrous, creative, happy-making dream might you be holding onto?

What is one tiny step you might take now toward making that dream into reality?

Love,
Kathy
